About Western Heads East:

Western Heads East (WHE) is a non-profit collaboration between Western Staff, Students, Faculty and African partners, with a vision to support the establishment of probiotic yogurt micro-enterprises empowering women and youth groups while bringing health to their communities in Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda The probiotic bacteria and yogurt were developed by Dr. Gregor Reid at Western University and Dr. Sharareh Hekmat at Brescia University College. The probiotic foods have been shown to boost immune response, improve maternal health and microbiome health, and bind to eliminate aflatoxins from the body. The program began with one woman’s group in Tanzania in 2005 and has grown to more than 200 community production units feeding more than 250,000 people.

WHE also seeks to make a commitment to and spread awareness regarding critical and ethical global engagement, encouraging ourselves to follow reflexive practices and to be attentive of our power and privilege in partnerships and relationships.
